A KnoxBox is a high-security key box mounted on the outside of a building or near a secured entrance. It stores the keys or access devices firefighters may need during an emergency while limiting access to authorized responders.
What is a KnoxBox?
A secure key on site—available only when responders need it.
Property owners place approved building keys, access cards, or gate credentials inside the locked box. The KnoxBox is built to resist weather and physical attack and is keyed for the responding jurisdiction.
It is not the same as a realtor-style combination lockbox, and the property owner does not give SCFD a loose key to store at the station. The access item remains secured at the property where responding crews can find it.

Firefighters arrive
Crews identify the KnoxBox near the approved building entrance or access point.
Authorized access
SCFD uses its controlled Knox key to open the box and retrieve the building key, access card, or gate credential stored inside.
Faster entry
Crews can enter and begin addressing the emergency without waiting for a key holder or immediately forcing a secured door or gate.
Property is re-secured
After the incident, the building key is returned to the locked box so the property can remain secured.

Without an available key holder, firefighters may have to wait or force entry through a door, gate, or window. A properly installed and maintained KnoxBox can reduce that delay, help crews reach an alarm panel or the source of an emergency sooner, and avoid damage caused solely by forced entry.
It can be especially useful for businesses, gated properties, multi-family buildings, schools, churches, warehouses, and properties that are unoccupied overnight.
