A clear path to official information

Why approval comes first.

SCFD values a professional, responsive relationship with the news media. Routing requests through the Public Information Officer or a member of Command Staff helps us provide the right spokesperson, confirm what information may be released, and arrange access without disrupting emergency service.

This process does not limit independent reporting or access to public areas. It applies to official SCFD interviews, filming or access on department property, and participation by SCFD personnel in their official capacity.

What advance coordination protects

Access that supports transparency—and keeps the department ready.

Operational readiness

Fire stations remain in service at all times. Crews, apparatus, and facilities must stay ready to respond without delay.

Accurate information

The PIO or Command Staff can identify an authorized spokesperson and help prevent incomplete, conflicting, or unconfirmed information from being released.

Privacy and legal obligations

Advance coordination helps protect patient privacy, personnel information, active investigations, and records that cannot lawfully be released.

Safety and security

Station access and filming must be coordinated so visitors remain in approved areas and do not interfere with emergency operations, training, or secure spaces.
